About the surgeon
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko is a Doctor of Medical Sciences, a physician of the highest category, an orthopaedic trauma surgeon, neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon. One of the key areas of his clinical and academic work is the surgical treatment of pectus excavatum in adolescents and adults.
Surgeries are carried out at the State Institution «National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the NAMS of Ukraine» in Kyiv.
Personal experience with the Nuss procedure
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko has been personally performing correction of pectus excavatum using the Nuss procedure since 2007.
As of 2026, his personal experience comprises:
- more than 2,000 procedures performed personally;
- approximately 100–120 procedures performed personally every year;
- treatment of adolescent and adult patients;
- experience with complex, asymmetric and rigid deformities;
- scheduled follow-up of patients until the metal bars are removed.
Every procedure is planned individually. The shape and severity of the deformity, chest wall asymmetry, the patient's age, the elasticity of the costosternal complex, the position of the heart and lungs, and the results of any previous surgery are all taken into account.
Personal supervision of treatment
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko personally assesses the indications for surgery, plans the surgical correction and performs the main stage of the procedure.
Video-thoracoscopic control makes it possible to visualise the position of the internal organs while the bar is being passed. The number and configuration of the bars are determined individually, depending on the anatomy and rigidity of the chest wall.
Follow-up continues after discharge and covers recovery, monitoring of the bar position and preparation for its elective removal.

According to his own records and internal audit of the outcomes of operations personally performed by Professor Iakiv Fishchenko since 2007:
- the complication rate is below 4%;
- the recurrence rate is below 1% — according to Professor Iakiv Fishchenko's internal clinical records.
These are the professor's internal clinical statistics, not the figures of the Institute as a whole or of any third-party medical facility. Individual results may differ depending on the complexity of the deformity, age, comorbidities and adherence to postoperative recommendations.
